The Nire Valley
In the Nire Valley located in the heart of North West Waterford we like to think that time is not that important. Herding sheep, working a dog, cutting the turf, dancing a set, drinking a pint, all things have their own time and place. Whether you intend coming to walk a mountain, stroll a forest, break the golf course record, view the valley on horseback or just relax and do nothing at all, here at Hanora’s we feel confident that you will find satisfaction.
In the Nire Valley we are proud of our fine traditional heritage, all year round, at the weekends, and almost every night in summertime, traditional music, singing and dancing will take place in some of our charmingly quaint local pubs. You may bring your own musical instrument or give a song or two and join in the lovely atmosphere and wonderful hospitality which is extended to the visitor.
The Irish language was the spoken tongue here until the early part of this century and to this day many of the old Celtic customs and phases survive in ordinary everyday life.
Nior bhris focal maith fiacial riamh.
Kind words never broke a tooth.
The name "Nire Valley" comes from the Gaelic "Gleann na hUidhre" which means Glen or Valley of the Yellow/Brown stone which is to be seen along the river bank. This Nire River tumbles down through the valley from its source high up in the Comeragh mountains to the smooth flowing Suir river near Newcastle.
